There is a seven-step process that you should use for developing standards-based IEPs. This process is designed to help you determine and identify appropriate goals that help your student reach grade-level standards, or at least know that you’re moving in the right direction. The Seven-Step Process to Creating Standards-based IEPs, from Project Forum at NASDSE, include the following:
- Consider grade-level content standards for the grade in which the student is enrolled or would be enrolled on age.
- Examine classroom and student data to determine where the student is functioning in relation to the grade-level standards.
- Develop the present level of academic achievement and functional performance.
- Develop measurable annual goals aligned with grade-level academic content standards.
- Assess and report student progress throughout the year.
- Identify specially-designed instruction including accommodations and/or modifications needed to access and progress in the general education curriculum.
- Determine the most appropriate assessment option.
The following sections of this course will guide you through the above seven-step process for developing standards-based IEPs.
